Description: This redbook, the result of a residency conducted at the ITSO Austin Center, was written to assist those individuals who need to understand the benefits, planning, installation, administration, and basic problem determination of the Directory and Security Server for OS/2 Warp product. We describe many of the benefits that can be reaped with use of the Directory and Security Server for OS/2 Warp. These benefits result from the integration of OSF/DCE Version 1.1 and the existing OS/2 LAN Server architecture. This integration is described in detail to help you understand and appreciate the power and scalability of DSS. A description of the core DCE components is also included for the DCE novice. As products gain features and capabilities, it becomes increasingly important to plan the implementation carefully. We discuss planning and design issues so that the installation is not only successful but also flexible enough to allow for evolving business needs. Poor planning can result in costly reconfiguration and unnecessary downtime. Sample scenarios are also included, some of which represent actual customer environments. Installation and configuration are covered in detail since they can be challenging or frustrating at times. We cover the most common installation scenarios and describe the configuration options and our recommendations. The DSS administrator now has many new capabilities and functions not present in OS/2 LAN Server and OS/2 Warp Server. We describe not only the existing functions but also the new, DSS- and DCE-specific options. Typical administration tasks, such as address changes and working with time zone changes (such as Daylight Savings Time), are also discussed. Some customers may have existing DCE cells and now want to integrate their OS/2 Warp Server domains into the infrastructure. There are some important prerequisites for installing DSS into an existing cell, such as an AIX DCE cell. These are discussed to ensure a successful installation. Whenever possible, we include real examples of program input and output to make concepts easier to understand. Some knowledge of OS/2 and OS/2 LAN Server or OS/2 Warp Server is assumed.
