Description: The White Paper 'The Licensing and Supervision of Deposit-Taking Institutions', published in August 1976, set out the Government's proposals for legislation for the prior authorisation and supervision of institutions which take deposits from the public. It explained that while some of these institutions, such as building societies and Trustee Savings Banks, were subject to a system of statutory supervision, and while the primary banking sector was supervised on a non-statutory basis by the Bank of England, there remained a number of institutions subject to no supervision. The proposed legislation would be directed to closing this gap in order to provide greater protection for depositors, and to ensure the health of the financial system generally.
