Description: Calkins (1857-1928) was born in Iowa Co., WI, and read law for three years early in his career. He lived much of his life on the western frontier, and was an early explorer of the Black Hills country. He visited many Indian tribes and became familiar with Indian languages. He also had an interest in animal and bird life of the plains and mountains. He wrote mainly about the frontier and Indians.
