Description: I have tripped over 7 Lives of the Saints published by James Toovey 1844, and one of them is that of St German, Bishop of St Auxerre. I haven't read every word, but in the introduction it is at pains to point out that Saint German was his Englis name, not Saint Germanus nor Saint Germain. He was 'born in the fourth century, and flourished in the beginning of the fifth.' 'He was not a Briton by birth, parents , or habitual residence...his great services to our nation..honoured with the title of Apostle to the Britons'. 169 pages long. Page 162: 'German and Lupus remained less than a year in Britain, but during that short time they rendered invaluable services to the people.' Page 56 gives an elliptical description of him: 'No distinct account has been left us of the personal appearance of German.' Mike Willmott Shrewsbury Words 01743 366933 [email protected]
