By Neville Kirk
Subjects: Socialists, Biography, Politics and government, Politicians, Dictionaries, Labour Party (Great Britain)
Description: The Dictionary of Labour Biography has an established and outstanding reputation as a reference and research tool for scholars of nineteenth and twentieth century Btitish history. Volume XI, under new editors, builds on this record. Scholarly and original essays on individuals are complemented by essays on related and often neglected topics. Each entry is written by a specialist and contains a thorough bibliography. The dictionary covers a wide range of periods, backgrounds and political traditions, and incorporates the most recent historiographical developments within the field. In particular Volume XI emphasises the contributions of women and the multi-nationality of the British labour movement. Attention is paid to Labour members who sided with Ramsay MacDonald in 1931 and became hidden from labour history. The volume also draws on the revolution in Communist studies that followed the opening of Russian archives.
