World War II in photographs

By John Pimlott

Subjects: Campaigns, World War, 1939-1945, Pictorial works

Description: World War II provided some of the most dramatic and intense images of the modern world: from a Stuka peeling off into a dive to the weariness etched into the faces of the German infantry at Stalingrad, and from the joy of the liberation of western Europe to the mushroom cloud at Hiroshima. World War in Photographs puts these images together, illustrating the great turning pints, the different theatres, the machines and the technology but above all the human face of this epic struggle. Here, then, is the fruit of years of research in the libraries, archives and private collections of the world, from eastern Europe to the United States and from Germany to Japan. There are over 500 stunning illustrations, including maps and diagrams to clarify the various theatres; altogether this is a marvellous visual record of the last war.
