Description: The Russian revolution left the orphaned Sonechka Balk destitute and destroyed her idyllic life in the Crimea. Aged 19 in 1924, she fled to Shanghai, where she became one of the thirty thousand White Russian exiles, shunned by the rest of the world. In 1948 she emigrated to the United States with her two daughters, Olga and Margarita.
